Christmas is the time of year that should be celebrated with others. It's about family, enjoying the weather and the season, sending well wishes to friends...it's a good time of year. One that everyone enjoys.
Well. Normally.
Tsumiki Mikan has never really liked it much.
Sure, she enjoys the weather and loves the decorations. And she likes hearing "Happy Holidays" from clerks and store workers when she's out shopping but...for her it's a very lonely season. Her family is always too busy to spend it with her - she gets a call, telling her the same thing she hears every year. Enjoy the holidays, Mikan. Sorry they can't be there again. They'll send her some money to get a nice dinner - and while she does have a very...small...handful of people she could call her friends, they do have families to spend time with. Nobody's ever really had the time for her around this season.
Which...that's okay. She's used to it. It's been this way since she was little. It's no big deal.
Telling herself this doesn't help any as knocks on Hinata's door with a present for the boy in hand. He's the only person getting a gift from her this year.
That may or may not have anything to do with the fact that he's probably the only one who wouldn't tell her how shitty her gift is. Even if it's probably pretty shitty.

He just needed to text her to ask her if she wanted to hang out. For Christmas. No big deal, really. Yeah. He was definitely going to do it!
The knocking startles him out of his private pep-talk, and he's quick to shove his phone into his pocket and a poorly-wrapped gift out of sight before opening the door.
"Tsumiki!?"

"...i-is...this a bad time, Hinata-san? I-I can...come back later! Or...not at all if you'd prefer...I-I don't have to come back..."
no subject
Alright. Bring it back. He leans casually against the doorframe and clears his throat, doing his best not to look at the present. She can't have gotten something for him... right? Maybe she wanted advice on how to give it to someone else. Yeah. That seems likely.
"What's up?"
no subject
No. No she couldn't have done that. Everyone would probably tease him because she was giving him a gift...
Oh right, the gift! She holds the box out to him sheepishly. It's a smallish box, wrapped in very bright and happy gift wrap. She clearly spent a lot of time on it, as the wrapping job is absolutely perfect. There's a ribbon tied around it with a bow on top and a card tucked underneath to keep it in place.
"I-I...just wanted to stop by and wish you a happy holiday. And...g-give...you this."
Yes Hinata. That gift is for you.
"If you don't want to take it that's fine...I'll understand..."
This is all probably very American because Ki doesn't know shit about Japanese Christmas traditions and she apologizes.
no subject
N-no, I'd be happy to!
[Even if he didn't want to, you know, try to ask her out, he'd still take it. What kind of jerk would turn down a present? ...Probably anyone Tsumiki's tried to give a present to, but, well.]
Uh... I've got something for you, too. It's not a big deal, it's kind of small, but, uh... hang on, I'll grab it.
[Keeping a careful hold of her offered present in one hand, he disappears behind the door to fetch the small gift. It's a little box, and a corner might be poking out from the wrapping? But he'd tried, okay.]
So, um. Do you want to go somewhere? We can open them together, if you want.
[Smooth. Cool. He's totally got this as he holds the wrapped box toward her, keeping her present in his other hand.]

[If Hinata felt dumbfounded, Tsumiki is absolutely floored. Her brain may have stopped working. In fact, even as she gently takes the box - almost as if it's glass, as if it needs to be handled so carefully otherwise it may break - it still hasn't caught up with anything.
There's a gift in her hand.
A gift to her.
To her from someone else.
From Hinata-san.
Wait didn't he just ask you something Tsumiki--]
Huwha? G-go somewhere? Together?
[It's not that she doesn't want to, Hinata. Don't take this reaction the wrong way. Hopefully by now though you'll know that she just can't believe you're asking her that. That you really want to go somewhere with her...]

[That seemed the safest suggestion, considering that it seemed as if he brought up the gift, it might actually break her. Still, he can't help but smile when she takes it, even if it's a little sad. That's... not the right way to respond to a gift. As if she'd never received one before.
Then again, maybe it was asking too much of her? Maybe she didn't want to go somewhere with him, maybe he should have left it just at the gift exchange. Shit. Uh--]
I-I mean, only if you're not busy. Or anything.
no subject
I-I'm not busy!! I-I...I would love to go to the park with Hinata-san...
[She would like that more than anything...]
no subject
[His voice definitely didn't crack there. Definitely not. Everything is going better than expected so far. All he has to do is not ruin it, and he actually kind of has a date for Christmas.
He can't resist hefting her gift in one hand to try to get a feel for what it could be, as he reaches around the door to grab his coat. Maybe he should have invited her in? Too late. Time to go.]
Ready?
no subject
A child who might be afraid that the delicious candy she wants is going to bite her but...still.
There's a smile despite the nerves.]
If y-you are, Hinata-san!
[The gift, however, doesn't have too much weight to it. It definitely isn't anything like infinite socks type light-weighted but it's not the most heavy thing in the world either. Hmmmm what could it be?]
